ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The state is getting a 4-year, $1 million federal grant to improve the quality of life for New Yorkers with traumatic brain injuries.

State Health Commissioner Richard Daines says traumatic brain injury is one of the leading killers of adults and children. He also says many of those with TBI are military veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan.

As of summer 2007, 20% of U.S. troops leaving Iraq and Afghanistan reported experiencing a traumatic brain injury during deployment. Blasts are the leading cause in these situations.

With the grant, the state department of health will build on its partnership with the state Division of Veterans' Affairs and the Brain Injury Association of New York (State).
