Parents Want Buses To Take All Students To School That Teaches Sign Language

By: NY1 News
Parents say buses need to take all students to a school that teaches sign language, not just some of them.

Right now, the New York City Department of Education only provides busing for deaf and hearing impaired students.

Several students at The American Sign Language and English Lower School are siblings of deaf children, which means they have to be taken to school by their parents or use public transportation.

"It's exhausting for them," said Melody Aremas, an advocate for the hearing impaired. "The parents are exhausted, and we want the children to get to school safely."

"To pick up one child from the same family and not the other makes no sense," said Joel Goldfarb, a former teacher.

The Department of Education said busing is determined based on requirements such as age and distance, but the department did not comment on the requirement that the students be hearing-impaired.
