STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- A Westerleigh man old enough to know better stole an Access-A-Ride van, then told police he did it to "pay off a debt," according to prosecutors.

An NYPD auxiliary officer noticed Frank Ackerson, 61, of Joan Place, trying the door handles of several vehicles in front of the New York Sports Club at 300 West Service Rd. in Travis about 9 p.m. Tuesday, according to court papers.

Ackerson then got into the aforementioned Access-A-Ride vehicle, court papers allege.

Police spoke to a manager at MVP Transportation, which owns the van, and found out that the vehicle had been stolen earlier that evening, court papers allege.

Said Ackerson, "I took the van to pay off a debt," according to court papers. Authorities did not elaborate on that alleged statement.

Ackerson is charged with fourth-degree grand larceny, fourth-degree criminal possession of stolen property and attempted petit larceny, according to information from District Attorney Daniel Donovan's office.
