As officials probe Greek Festival fires as possible arson, community on edge

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- The Bulls Head community remains on edge as authorities are looking into whether fire incidents on the grounds of the Greek Festival constitute arson.

An FDNY spokesman would only say that blaze was "incendiary," meaning that it was deliberately set, and that the investigation by the fire marshals continues.

A police source also confirmed the incidents at the Greek Festival are under investigation as possible arson.

The incidents happened at about 9 a.m. on Sunday, which was the final day of the 44th annual Greek Festival on the grounds of Holy Trinity-St. Nicholas Greek Orthodox Church.

An individual or group of people tried to start fires in five different locations on the grounds and succeeded in burning a portable handicapped bathroom, said Nick Tamborra, one of the festival organizers.

Tamborra speculated that an individual or group of people were trying to stall or prevent the opening on the last day of the festival.

"It was like a deliberate, malicious act to try and create a little havoc," Tamborra said, adding, "luckily, it was quite fortunate that events didn't happen the way the individual or individuals had planned."

Church members are "extremely upset" by the fire incidents, Tamborra said.

"The festival is something that is for everybody," he said. "It's not for one particular group and it's to be enjoyed by everybody. Apparently, somebody tried to interfere with that happening."

Fortunately, the fire was put out quickly by the portable toilet maintenance workers who happened upon the blaze in their normal routine of service.
